A note on FSC claims — read this before specifying
"FSC certified" applies to a specific material line, not to a finished box. A rigid box typically contains a greyboard core, a wrap paper, an insert and an adhesive. FSC certification frequently covers the wrap paper only.
Three claims we see used incorrectly in this industry:
- "This box is FSC certified." — Usually inaccurate. The correct form is
"wrapped in FSC-certified paper, certificate {{FSC-CXXXXXX}}." 2. "FSC means recycled." — FSC covers responsible forest management, which includes virgin fibre. FSC Recycled is a separate claim. 3. "Laminated boxes are recyclable." — Soft-touch and matte laminations bond plastic film to paper. Most municipal fibre streams reject them. Aqueous varnish achieves a similar visual result and remains repulpable.
